Menopause, the transition marking the end of menstruation, is a natural and inevitable process. But did you know that menopause doesn't happen overnight? Therefore, recognising its early signs is important to manage the complications. We spoke to Dr Lubna Khan, Consultant Gynaecologist, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, who listed early signs of menopause that you should watch out for.
What Is Menopause
Menopause, a natural biological transition, marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. Dr Khan said that it typically occurs between the ages of 45-55. However, the journey towards menopause can start years before the actual event. According to the Journal of Women's Health, women experiencing menopausal symptoms reported significantly higher work impairment, and healthcare utilisation than women without menopausal symptoms.
Early Signs Of Menopause
Here are the seven early signs of menopause listed by Dr Khan:
Irregular Periods
Menstrual cycles become unpredictable, with changes in the frequency, duration, or flow of periods. The cycle may shorten or lengthen, and bleeding may become heavier or lighter. It is crucial to track these changes and discuss them with your healthcare provider.
Hot Flashes
Dr Khan informed us that sudden and intense sensations of heat may spread over the body. It is often accompanied by sweating and flushing. They can last for a few seconds to several minutes and may occur frequently.

Night Sweats
Another symptom includes episodes of excessive sweating during sleep that can drench clothes and bedding. Night sweats are similar to hot flashes, but they only happen when you're sleeping.
Mood Changes
Menopause can cause hormonal fluctuations that affect mood and emotions. Women may experience mood swings, irritability, anxiety, or feelings of sadness or depression.
Vaginal Dryness
Dr Khan said that declining oestrogen levels can lead to decreased vaginal lubrication, causing dryness, and discomfort. It can result in pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.
Sleep Disturbances
Menopause can disrupt your peaceful slumber, leading to nights filled with tossing, turning, and counting sheep. Hormonal changes during menopause might alter sleep patterns. Night sweats can further contribute to sleep disturbances. You may wake up feeling tired and unrested, affecting your daily functioning and overall well-being.
Changes in Libido
Fluctuating hormone levels can affect sexual desire or interest. Some women may notice a drop in libido or changes in their sexual response. These changes can vary, but if you observe a significant shift in your sexual desire without any apparent cause, it could be a sign of menopause.

Changes in Skin and Hair
Menopause can affect your skin and hair, leading to dryness, thinning, and increased brittleness. You may notice a decrease in skin elasticity and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hair may become drier, thinner, and more prone to breakage.
Bottomline
It's important to note that these signs can vary in intensity and duration among women. If you suspect you may be experiencing menopause, consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended for proper evaluation and guidance.
