Breastfeeding is a natural element of motherhood, providing essential nutrients and creating an emotional connection between a mother and her baby that goes beyond mere nourishment. This intimate act serves as a valuable tool for nurturing a child and creating a deep bond that lasts a lifetime. The connection of breastfeeding is unique and emotional, which enhances the experience of both mother and child’s well-being physically and psychologically.
We spoke to Dr Atchara Venkatraman, Founder of Bump2Cradle, Childbirth Educator, Child Development Consultant, Child psychologist (ICPEM certified) and Maternal and Infant Nutritionist, who explained the emotional connection of breastfeeding.
The Love Hormone and Emotional Bonding
Dr Venkatraman said, “Breastfeeding goes beyond its nutritional benefits; it plays a key role in beginning a deep emotional connection between a mother and her baby. The hormone oxytocin, often referred to as the ‘love hormone’ is released during breastfeeding, nurturing the feelings of love, trust, and emotional bonding. This biological reaction strengthens the mother-child bond, forming a beginning for their relationship that goes beyond words.”
She added, “As the baby grows, breastfeeding continues to be a source of comfort and care, providing a haven during times of discomfort or illness. Also, it helps to grow and strengthen the child's emotional intelligence as they learn to understand and respond to their mother's emotions.”
According to a study published in Springer conducted on eight months old infants, it was found that babies who were breastfed for more than five months had a stronger response in their brain when they saw happy faces. They also paid less attention to fearful expressions. This suggests that breastfeeding for a longer duration may make babies focus more on positive emotions.

Alternative Means of Nurturing and Emotional Connection
Dr Venkatraman highlighted, “Not all mothers are solely dependent on breastfeeding for various reasons, and this doesn't reduce the emotional connection they can build with their child through other means of care and nurturing. In today's society, many mothers face challenges balancing their professional life and motherhood. Some mothers choose breast pumps to provide breast milk for their babies.”
Breast Pumping and Emotional Connection
Dr Venkatraman added, “For working moms, breastfeeding can be challenging. The detachment from their babies during work hours can evoke feelings of fault and impatience. To bridge the physical gap and maintain the emotional connection, many working moms turn to breast pumps.” While it might not recreate the exact intimacy of breastfeeding, breast pumping does help mothers provide their milk while they are physically away.
The Emotional Side of Breast Pumping
Dr Venkatraman said, “The emotional side of breast pumping is rooted in the unwavering dedication and devoted commitment it expects from working mothers. Pumping at work can be a bittersweet experience, as it serves as a reminder of the bond shared with their child and the longing to be with them. Still, the act of expressing breast milk can also be empowering, knowing that they are making a significant effort to nurture their baby despite the challenges of their busy work life.”

Beyond Infancy: The Long-lasting Connection
Dr Venkatraman informed, “Breastfeeding is much more than just a means of nourishment. It is a powerful bridge that connects both mother and baby. This emotional connection extends beyond infancy and can be a source of comfort and security for the child as they grow.”
She also said, “For mothers, breastfeeding can be a life-changing experience that strengthens their sense of motherhood and empowers them in their motherhood role. Even for working moms who face unique challenges, breast pumping can still provide an emotional connection to their babies, showcasing the unbreakable bond formed through the act of nurturing and providing for their child.”
