Naming your baby boy is a decision with which he will be stuck with for the rest of his life. You may want to honour your family tradition, give a meaningful name for some particular traits or just have a name that sounds good and is easy to pronounce. Whatever be your taste or special considerations for choosing a name for your little one, think about some factors before coming at a decision.
First thing to decide is whether you want a name that stands out in a crowd or one which is familiar in your socio-cultural environment. Both these aspects have their pros and cons. A popular baby name will allow your child to feel fitting in your society while a less common name will make his a statement about his personality. It is up to you to decide about how you want your child to associate with other people. You might want to consider naming your child according to the names of his siblings. It would not be advisable to name your child such that he is not able to connect with his brother(s) or sister(s).

Your family heritage at times supersedes all other considerations when naming your child. You still need to be conscious of how it will sound and whether it will embarrass your boy when he grows up. Alterations in the family name may be needed to make for acceptability in contemporary times. Similarly, do not go overboard in trying to have unique names for your child. The word “Joy” is a good choice for name that stands out but imagine your son becoming a doctor with the name “Destiny”. This will keep embarrassing him for the rest of his life. Indian parents at times make the mistake of giving a name that is an unpronounceable tongue twister. Guard against this too.
It would be good to jot down the names that come up in your mind one by one and talk them through with your partner. Go through these until you are able to find one that is liked by both of you. The name that you give your child will be his identity for the rest of his life. So, do not hasten, take everything into consideration and arrive at a suitable name. You might want to say aloud your chosen name with the surname to see if it sounds odd or not. At times hearing names with and without middle names help you decide whether it is good or not.
