Did you know breastfeeding is a time for bonding with the baby? It goes beyond providing essential nutrition as it fosters a deep emotional connection between the mother and her child. It is a soothing time for the baby to feel secure. Maintaining personal hygiene during breastfeeding is important for the well-being of both mother and baby. We spoke to our expert Rajesh Vohra, CEO, Artsana India (Chicco), in assistance with Chicco Research Centre, Italy, who shared tips and essential products to help you maintain optimal health and hygiene during breastfeeding.
Tips To Maintain Hygiene During Breastfeeding
Implement the use of Breast Pads
Vohra said, “In the early days of breastfeeding, many mothers experience leakage of breast milk between feedings. To counter this problem, use breast pads. They are small absorbent pads designed to be placed inside a nursing bra to absorb leaking breast milk during breastfeeding.” Look for pads that offer a secure fit, breathability, and effective absorption that help to prevent embarrassing leaks by absorbing the excess milk.

Breast Wipes
Vohra informed, “Breast wipes provide a gentle and convenient way to cleanse the breast and nipple area before and after breastfeeding. Always clean breasts with a specialised breast wipe free from alcohol, fragrance, parabens, and phenoxyethanol.” They must be dermatologically and microbiologically tested and prebiotic active to preserve good microflora of the breast’s skin and eliminate germs from the skin.
According to the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, an increased incidence of upper and lower respiratory tract infections and gastrointestinal infections in newborns and children was substantially correlated with inadequate exclusive breastfeeding and mothers' lack of sanitary feeding practises.
Use Manual and Electric Breast Pumps
Breast pumps are devices designed to extract breast milk from lactating mothers, providing an option for expressing and storing breast milk for later use. Both manual and electric breast pumps are valuable tools for expressing milk efficiently and comfortably.
A. Manual Breast Pumps
Vohra informed, “Manual breast pumps are operated by hand for milk expression. They are designed for ease of use, allowing you to express milk naturally and efficiently.” Look for a manual breast pump made of high-quality materials that ensure safety and hygiene.
B. Electric Breast Pumps
Vohra said, “Electric breast pumps are powered by electricity and have a motor that creates suction to express milk from the breasts automatically. Some models offer different suction levels and pumping patterns for added comfort and efficiency for new-age mothers.” These pumps provide adjustable speed and suction strength settings, mimicking the natural nursing rhythm. Choose an electric breast pump that prioritises comfort and effective milk expression.

Nipple Shield
Vohra informed, “Your breasts will change every day after pregnancy. Some days will be sore while others will be drained. Pain in sore nipples can make your breastfeeding journey challenging. A nipple shield worn over the nipple while breastfeeding can help and give a chance for sore nipples to heal. They ensure maximum skin-to-skin contact, allowing for a thoughtful and intimate connection with your baby.”
Bottomline
Vohra concluded, “By maintaining personal hygiene practices, you can promote a positive and comfortable breastfeeding experience yourself and provide your baby with the best possible nourishment. By incorporating the essential products we've mentioned above, you can enhance your breastfeeding journey with comfort, convenience, and effectiveness.”
