According to a recent study it was found that women with irregular periods are at a higher risk of developing coronary heart disease. We spoke to our expert Dr Karthika Reddy Byreddy, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, who explained the connection between heart health and irregular periods.
A new study in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that women with periods that are shorter or longer than the usual 22-34 days are more likely to have heart problems like heart attacks and irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation) compared to women with normal cycle lengths. When your periods happen at the same time every month, it means the hormones in your brain and ovaries are working well. This is a good sign for your overall health.
Dr Byreddy said, “The research indicates that irregular menstrual cycles are linked to an increased risk of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD). He added Both shorter and longer menstrual cycle lengths have been associated with a higher likelihood of developing CVD and atrial fibrillation. However, irregular periods don't seem to have a connection to heart problems like heart failure, or strokes.”

The study found that about 20% of women have irregular periods where the timing between periods isn't consistent. Dr Byreddy said, “Hormonal treatment is the primary approach for addressing menstrual irregularities. However, lifestyle modifications also play a crucial role in managing these issues without any side effects. Making healthy lifestyle changes can help with both irregular periods and keeping your heart healthy. It can even lower the risk of heart disease by as much as 82%.” Some of the lifestyle modifications to be followed are:
