In modern India we have access to seedless watermelon, genetically modified sweet corn, avocadoes which have travelled thousand miles. Infact, now we have some fruits available all year round like mangoes are available even in winters. With the increase in availability of non-seasonal fruits, genetically modification of fruits and availability of imported fruits, we have long forgotten about our ancient fruits and vegetables which were available in our continent. In monsoon our requirement to build immunity increases and in our Indian subcontinent we have been blessed with traditional fruits which can give immense health benefits.
1. Karonda
Karonda is rich in vitamin c and many other nutrients. This wonderful fruit is often compared to cranberries. Karonda is used as side vegetable dish, pickles, drinks / sherbet, jams and chutneys. Karonda is extremely useful in treating piles and constipation as it is rich in fiber. When it is given to pregnant women or during iron deficiency anemia, it increases absorption of iron. It is effective in treating urinary tract infections and its vitamin c helps in boosting collagen, making it excellent for hair and skin. It boosts our immunity by reducing inflammation. So, I suggest eating karonda this season at least 2-3 times in a week for better health.
2. Raw Banana
Traditionally, raw bananas have been used in prayers. This fruit is an excellent fruit for improving gut health and to uplift our moods. Raw bananas provide resistant starch to our body, this starch helps in growth of friendly bacteria in our gut and helps release short chain fatty acids which are essential for our immune function, brain health and gives us energy through the day. They are also rich in iron and vitamin B6, making it a great fruit to consume for anti-ageing and healthy skin and hair. It prevents diarrhea and maintains blood pressure. Use raw banana in tiki's, as a seasonal vegetable by sauteeing or chips or vegetable poriyal. Use raw banana 2-3 times in the week for improved health benefits.
