While monsoon may be a delightful time for many, individuals with asthma often face challenges during this season. The increase in humidity, mould growth, and exposure to allergens can trigger asthma symptoms, making it essential for asthma patients to take precautions during the monsoon. To know more about it we spoke to Dr Viswesvaran Balasubramanian, Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Reasons for Rise in Asthma During Monsoon

High Humidity

Monsoon is characterised by increased humidity levels, which can have a significant impact on asthma patients. High humidity makes breathing difficult for them as it affects the airway passages. The moisture-laden air can cause the airways to narrow, leading to breathing difficulties and triggering asthma attacks.

Mould Growth

Asthma-attacks

The dampness and moisture during the monsoon provide favourable conditions for mould growth. According to the American Lung Association, inhaling mould can trigger asthma and other allergy symptoms in individuals who are allergic to it.

Mould can be found in various places, such as walls, carpets, furniture, and even in indoor plants. Inhaling mould spores can lead to respiratory distress and trigger asthma attacks.

Increased Allergen Exposure

The monsoon season brings an abundance of allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, and insect remains. These allergens can trigger an immune response in asthma patients, leading to inflammation of the airways and asthma symptoms. Asthma patients should be cautious while venturing outdoors during the monsoon, especially in areas with a high concentration of allergens.

Precautions Asthma Patients Should Take During Monsoon

Dr Balasubramanian said that during the monsoon season, individuals with asthma need to take certain precautions to manage their condition effectively.

"Rain can trigger asthma symptoms due to increased moisture, mould, and allergens in the air. Try to stay indoors, especially during heavy rainfall or thunderstorms," said the doctor.

He suggested to ensure that your home is free from dampness and moulds. "Clean and dry any wet areas promptly to prevent mould growth. Use a dehumidifier if necessary," he added.

"Since allergens, such as dust mites and moulds can aggravate asthma symptoms, regularly clean your house, dust furniture, and vacuum carpets. Use allergen-proof covers on pillows and mattresses," he suggested.

"To prevent rainwater from entering your home and to minimise exposure to outdoor allergens, keep your windows closed during the monsoon season," he said.

"Consider using air purifiers with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters to reduce indoor allergens and improve air quality. This can help in minimising asthma triggers," he added.

"Viral and bacterial infections can worsen asthma symptoms. Thus, wash your hands frequently to prevent respiratory infections," said the doctor.

"It's essential to follow your asthma management plan and take medications as prescribed by your doctor. Make sure to have an adequate supply of your asthma medications during the monsoon season," said Dr Balasubramanian.

"If you need to go outside, check the weather forecast for air quality and allergen levels. Avoid going out during heavy rainfall or when the air quality is poor," he added.

Dr Balasubramanian suggested keeping your rescue inhaler with you at all times, especially when you're outdoors. This will help you manage any sudden asthma symptoms.

"If you experience worsening asthma symptoms or have difficulty managing your condition during the monsoon season, consult your doctor for proper evaluation and guidance," he added.

Remember, everyone's asthma triggers can vary, so it's important to understand your triggers and take necessary precautions to manage your condition effectively.
