Advancements in genomic research and technology have revolutionised the field of healthcare, empowering individuals to gain valuable insights into their genetic makeup. Direct-To-Consumer (D2C) genome testing has emerged as a powerful tool, allowing people to access their genetic information and play an active role in their preventive healthcare. To learn more about how D2C genome testing is playing a key role in democratising preventive healthcare by providing personalised genetic insights, we spoke to two popular experts in the domain.
Understanding D2C Genome Testing
D2C genome testing involves individuals ordering genetic testing kits directly from companies, usually online, without the need for a healthcare professional's involvement. These kits typically include a saliva or cheek swab sample collection device and detailed instructions for returning the sample to the company. Once the sample is received and analysed, customers can access their genetic information through secure online platforms or mobile applications.
Zainab Abbas, Senior Genetic Consultant, Lord's Mark Microbiotech said, "Genetic testing helps us understand if we're more likely to have health problems and how our bodies might react to different lifestyles." "It tells us about the changes in our genes that affect our traits, health conditions, and how we respond to drugs," she mentioned.
In India, non-communicable diseases contribute to 53% of all mortality cases and account for 44% of the years lost due to disability, as per the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Personal Genomics
"The genetic makeup, which one invariably inherits from parents, decides whether an individual is prone to developing diseases or disease-related conditions. Personal genomics, which involves deciphering critical information from an individual's genes made up of sequences of Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) can provide insights into genetic predispositions to diseases, as well as how the body may respond to various lifestyle factors," said Subodh Gupta, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) - Lord's Mark Microbiotech.
He added that analysing genetic profiles offers valuable information that facilitates the customisation of food choices, exercise regimens, etc., to prevent the onset of non-communicable diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, dementia, hypertension, and cancers.
"Deriving insights from complex genomic data, genome testing helps in ascertaining the underlying risks of developing many diseases," said Gupta. He added that genome testing empowers individuals in taking control of their health by adopting preventive wellness measures which help in reducing the probability of onset, impact, and limiting the complications of diseases after the onset.
Role of Genetic Counsellors
"Genetic counsellors are specialists who gather personal and medical information to assess the risk of health conditions. They also provide knowledge on preventing diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, dementia, hypertension, and cancers," said Abbas.
"This information helps people make informed decisions about their diet, supplements, exercise, and medications if needed. It empowers individuals to take control of their health by preventing diseases, reducing their impact, and managing complications," said the expert.

Making Preventive Genome Testing Available
It's important to make preventive genome testing available to more people. "Non-invasive genome testing kits, which don't require drawing blood, are now accessible. This makes it convenient for more people to focus on preventive wellness. The availability, affordability, quick results, accuracy, and ease of use make genome testing appealing," said Abbas.
"Given the growing awareness of preventive healthcare, adoption of personal genomics through genome testing is set to witness steady growth in India. The growing adoption of healthy lifestyles especially after the pandemic phase will drive the demand for genomic testing," stated Gupta.
Conclusion
Abbas said that by empowering individuals with preventive and personalised healthcare tailored specifically to them we can ultimately make lives better along with trying to lessen the economic burden on our country, reduce overall healthcare costs, and alleviate stress on healthcare infrastructure.
