Onlymyhealth Tamil

Have you ever wondered if your habits after a meal affect your health? Well, they certainly can! After eating, it's essential to make smart choices to support your digestion and well-being. From the temptation of eating sugary desserts to lying down after a meal, following healthy eating habits post-meal is a must. We spoke to Dr Sanjay Kumar, General Physician, Cygnus Laxmi Hospital, who listed things to avoid after eating and tips to follow for better digestion.

Things To Avoid After Eating

Lying Down or Sitting Inactively

Yes, it is tempting to lie down or remain sedentary after a meal, however, this rest can take a toll on your health. Dr Kumar said, “This can slow down digestion and lead to indigestion. As a result, you may gain extra calories and ultimately weight gain. Therefore, opt for a leisurely walk or engage in light physical activity to aid digestion.”

Skipping Hydration Completely

Dr Kumar said, “Not drinking water after a meal is a mistake many people make. Adequate hydration is essential for digestion. However, avoid excessive water consumption immediately after eating, as it can dilute stomach acids and hinder the digestive process. Instead, sip water in moderation.”

Indulging in Sugary Desserts

Treating yourself with sugary desserts after a meal is a divine feeling. However, you should refrain from doing so as desserts are high in sugar and can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. This may cause cravings and energy crashes. If you crave something sweet after a meal, opt for healthier alternatives like fruits or dark chocolate in moderation.

Stressful Activities

Dr Kumar added, “Engaging in stressful tasks or arguments immediately after a meal can affect digestion negatively. Try to create a calm and relaxed environment post-meal to aid in the digestion process.”

Tips For Better Digestion

Avoid Overeating

One of the most common mistakes is overeating during a meal. Dr Kumar said, “Consuming excessive food in one sitting can lead to discomfort, bloating, and even weight gain. Hence, it's essential to practise portion control and listen to your body's hunger and fullness cues.”

Include Fibre-Rich Foods

Incorporate fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your meals to promote healthy digestion. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fibre promotes digestive health and keeps you fuller for a longer duration.

Wait Before Physical Activity

Allow some time (about 30 minutes to an hour) before engaging in strenuous physical activities after a meal. Following a meal with exercise can hamper your digestion. You might even experience loose motions, an enlarged stomach, and the want to vomit.

Mindful Eating

Be present during your meals, and avoid distractions like phones or television. This helps you eat slowly and recognise when you're full. Click here to learn about mindful eating.

Chew Your Food Properly

This aids in digestion and nutrient absorption. So take your time while eating food, there's no need to hurry.

Bottomline

Dr Kumar concluded, “Individual needs may vary, so it's essential to listen to your body and adjust your post-meal routine accordingly. Consulting with a healthcare professional or nutritionist can provide personalised guidance to address specific concerns and create a tailored post-meal regime for optimal health.”
