Have you ever experienced that sudden, unpleasant sensation when your tongue tastes sour out of the blue? It can be quite perplexing, especially when you haven't eaten anything sour or taken any specific medications. This peculiar occurrence has left many wondering about the underlying causes and possible explanations behind this strange taste sensation. To know more about the causes of a sudden sour taste in your mouth, we spoke to Dr Nihal Yadav, BDS, Amayra Dental Clinic, Kaushik Enclave, Burari, Delhi and Former Resident, Deen Dayal Hospital, Hari Nagar, Delhi.
Acid Reflux or GERD
"One of the primary reasons for a sudden sour taste in the mouth is acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)," said Dr Yadav. GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, causing irritation. "Sometimes, a small amount of this acidic content can reach your mouth, leaving a sour or bitter taste. Individuals who suffer from frequent heartburn or regurgitation are more likely to experience this sensation," he said.

Poor Oral Hygiene
"Neglecting oral hygiene can lead to the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria can produce acids that cause a sour taste," said Dr Yadav. He added that if you skip brushing your teeth or forget to floss regularly, it creates an ideal environment for bacterial growth, resulting in bad breath and an occasional sour taste in your mouth.
Certain Foods and Beverages
"Consuming certain foods and beverages can also trigger a sour taste sensation. Acidic foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and vinegar-based products can directly impart a sour taste to your tongue," said the doctor. He added that some alcoholic beverages, like wine, can be acidic, leaving a sour taste lingering in your mouth.
Medications
"Several medications can cause a sour or metallic taste as a side effect. Antibiotics, antihistamines, and certain blood pressure medications are known to be culprits," said Dr Yadav. He said that if you've recently started a new medication and noticed a sudden change in taste, it's worth checking the medication's side effects with your healthcare provider.
Dehydration
"Dehydration can affect the balance of saliva in your mouth, leading to altered taste perceptions. When you're dehydrated, your saliva may become more acidic, resulting in a sour taste," said Dr Yadav. He suggested that drinking enough water throughout the day can help maintain healthy saliva production and prevent this unpleasant sensation.

Stress and Anxiety
Believe it or not, stress and anxiety can also play a role in the sudden sour taste in your mouth. "When you are under stress, your body produces more acid, which can affect your taste buds and lead to the perception of a sour taste," said Dr Yadav.
Underlying Health Conditions
In some cases, a persistent sour taste in the mouth could be a sign of an underlying health issue. "Conditions like vitamin deficiencies, oral infections, and neurological disorders may contribute to this unusual taste sensation," he added.
Conclusion
Experiencing a sudden sour taste in your mouth can be an unsettling experience. While it's usually not a cause for major concern, it's essential to pay attention to the frequency and duration of this sensation. By maintaining good oral hygiene practices, staying hydrated, and being mindful of your diet, you can often prevent or alleviate the occurrence of this sour taste.
However, if you find that the sour taste persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional.
