Do you know for people suffering from diabetes, maintaining foot health is of paramount importance?  It is observed in many patients that diabetes can lead to nerve damage and poor blood circulation, making feet vulnerable to various complications.

There are several steps that must be taken to treat diabetic foot ulcers. "It's important to relieve pressure on the wound," said Dr Ranga Santhosh Kumar, Consultant General Physician and Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad. This involves not putting any weight or pressure on the area." He went on to say that the wound should be maintained clean and covered with moist dressings.

Why It Is Important To Take Care Of Diabetic Foot

According to the National Centre for Biotechnology Information, a foot ulcer develops in around 60% of diabetics as a result of neuropathy progression.

Diabetes can cause diabetic neuropathy, which affects the nerves and feelings in the foot. Neuropathy can make detecting injuries, wounds, or infections difficult. Diabetes can also impede blood flow, which is required for good wound healing. These variables, when combined, make diabetic foot problems a major concern.

Essential Foot Care Steps for Diabetics

"Sometimes, using special materials made from human cells or artificial skin can help cover the wound and promote healing," Dr Kumar explained. "Another option is to apply growth factors created in a laboratory to the wound."

"There is also a treatment known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which involves breathing in pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber," he added. "These treatments can be helpful, but they should only be used if there is no problem with blood flow in the area of the wound," Dr Kumar suggested.

Daily Inspection

Make it a habit to thoroughly examine your feet every day. Look for any cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or changes in skin colour. Early detection of issues can prevent them from worsening.

Proper Hygiene

Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water and mild soap. Gently dry them, paying attention to the spaces between your toes. Moisturise to prevent dry skin, but avoid applying lotion between your toes to prevent moisture buildup.

Choose the Right Footwear

It is important to wear well-fitting shoes with ample toe room to prevent friction and pressure. Inspect your shoes for foreign objects before putting them on. Avoid high heel shoes specifically designed for diabetics, offering extra support and cushioning.

Control Blood Sugar Levels

Keep your blood sugar levels within the target range recommended by your doctor. Good blood sugar control can aid in preventing nerve damage and other complications.

Regular Check-ups

Schedule regular appointments with a healthcare professional who specialises in diabetic foot care. They can identify potential issues early and provide guidance on proper foot care.

Immediate Attention to Wounds

Even minor cuts, blisters, or sores can escalate quickly for diabetics. Clean any wounds with mild soap and water, apply an antiseptic, and cover with a clean bandage. Seek medical attention if wounds don't heal promptly.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking can further reduce blood circulation and hinder the body's natural healing process. Quitting smoking is beneficial for overall health, including foot health.

Diabetes management requires that you take care of your feet. You may protect your feet from potential issues, support healthy circulation, and maintain an active lifestyle by following some basic foot care practises.
